Circadian Rhythm 101: How Your Internal Clock Actually Works

Buried in your hypothalamus is a cluster of roughly 20,000 neurons called the suprachiasmatic nucleus, or SCN — your body's master clock. Even in a lab with no external time cues, SCN neurons keep firing in a roughly 24-hour rhythm.

The SCN doesn't just control when you feel sleepy — it choreographs a whole set of daily rhythms. Core body temperature oscillates on the same schedule, and melatonin release is timed the same way, ramping up as the SCN registers darkness.

"Night owl" and "early bird" tendencies are real and largely genetic — but they're variations in the timing of the same underlying clock. What reliably disrupts everyone's rhythm is inconsistent light exposure and irregular schedules.
